Chapin Hall/TCOM team works with a number of states providing CANS on-line training and support.  As such, last month Chapin Hall/TCOM team announced that specific on-line training processes would be changed regarding CANS certification in response to other states’ requests.

The NYS DOH Children’s Health Homes team and the Chapin Hall/TCOM team want to highlight that this change is not for NYS CANS-NY users and last month’s announcement was a mistake.  Since NYS is in the middle of system transformation with a number of new users that will be utilizing the CANS-NY for Health Home, some that never have used the CANS and others who have used the CANS for a different purpose. It is important that we consistently train the workforce in an organized and reliable way, as our goal in New York State is to support meaningful use of the CANS-NY for assessment, care planning, and outcomes monitoring for children, youth and families we serve.

Therefore, starting tomorrow (10/16), New York State CANS-NY users will be required to complete all online course elements (videos, review of documents, and quizzes) before taking the practice and certification exams.  For users to best understand and implement the CANS-NY tool in practice, they must complete the course elements.  Working toward successful completion of the quizzes also better prepares users for the practice and certification exams.

We recognize that some CANS-NY users are well versed with the tool and may not feel they need to complete all course elements.  However, for new providers coming on board during the 1915c to Health Home transition, this requirement will support their learning.

As has been the case, if you attend live, in-person training with Dr. Button, you can reach out to Chapin Hall at  Chapin Hall will mark your other course elements as complete and you can move to the exams, as long as you do this within 30 days of attending a live training.
